What Is a Compounded Medication?
Compounded medications are drugs that are prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy based on a valid, patient-specific prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. Compounding allows pharmacists to create customized medications tailored to individual patient needs — for example, adjusting dosage forms, strengths, or removing allergens.

- Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved generic drugs. Generics are distinct FDA-approved products that must demonstrate bioequivalence to the brand-name drug.
